OB Sgt David Hartley (Durham '38) was a gilder pilot during the Second World War and flew into D-Day and the ill-fated Battle of Arnhem. Eighty years ago today, he would have been part of the defence of Oosterbeek, which was where those who failed to reach the Arnhem Bridge (pictured above) ended up.
